Fluoride Fiber (FF)

Fluoride Fiber (FF) is multi-composite glass optical fiber and ZBLAN fiber ( ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF ) is its representative.

Compared with silica fiber, FF has many unique characteristics in wide operating wavelength and emission efficiency when rare-earth elements are doped into. On the other hand, it has poorer glass stability and higher reactivity in humid atmospheres.

Chart 1 shows theoretical transmission wavelength range among three different kinds of glass materials. Compared to others, fluoride glass covers wider range in transmission wavelength range, and is only material applied to over 2000nm wavelength band.

>Fiber Optical Loss

Though it is theoretically said that optical loss of FF is much lower than silica fiber, actually it's not easy to manufacture highly purified low loss fluoride. Over the long years of studying, FiberLabs Inc. (FL) has established its own technique to manufacture FF less than 50 dB/km loss.

Shown in Chart 2, our FF performs practical loss in broad wavelength range. We, FL, have been continuing our R&D activities to improve our own manufacturing technique to achieve further low loss value by removing impurities and other methods.

>Emission of rare-earth element doped Fiber

Excellent emission characteristic is one of advantages of FF, when rare earth element doped into. Chart 3 shows emission efficiency of rare-earth element doped fiber. Silica fiber gives out emission but limited to the range only in near infrared rays, as we marked .

Besides, FF covers the wider range of infrared rays and visible rays. Also, emission of both 1.3 um and 1.4 um wavelength band is available by using none but FF. Both wavelength band are popular and major in optic fiber communications field.

Based on this emission characteristic, FL has been providing our own products, such as ASE Light Sources, Optical Amplifier, Laser, and other optical devices. To achieve better performance of emission characteristic, we, FL, have been developing fiber composite materials and the best design of fiber parameters.
